Michael Jackson had taken the Billboard album charts hostage ever since the death of the pop icon. Evidently, he's no match for the brooding power of Daughtry. The American Idol season 5 finalist took over the number one spot with his latest release "Leave This Town" which sold 269,000 units in its initial week. Daughtry previously charted a number 1 album with his eponymous effort back in 2006. The album debuted at number 2 on the album charts yet climbed to number one by week nine which is an unusual feat.
Michael Jackson's "Number Ones" fell to the number 2 slot, selling 192,000 copies, after ruling the catalog charts for the past three weeks. Given that his albums were release more than 18 months ago, Jackson's sales weren't eligible for the Billboard 200 charts. "Thriller" also surpassed "the Eagles Greatest Hits 1975-1979" to reclaim the honor of top-selling album of all time. In all, Jackson held six of the top 10 slots including "Off the Wall", "Dangerous" and "the Essential Michael Jackson."
Daughtry joins an elite group of American Idols whose second albums met the same fanfare as their first. Currently, Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson are the one two Idols to accomplish multiple number 1 albums.
Be sure to catch the Daughtry Tour when the group hits the road this fall.
